JS Tip 261: From the Creativity Workshop: Brainstorming Basketball (Part Two)

Last week, we invited you to be creative and to brainstorm ways to improve basketball.

You responded beautifully. This was fun.

Your suggestions were funny and serious. (One of the tough parts of judging was deciding if a suggestion was funny or serious.)

We’ll address your responses in the two categories.

The Funny

The Third Runner-up

Don't dry the floor when a player goes down. See more players slip-sliding away. (Paul Robischon)

The Second Runner-up

Make all players run backwards. (Darrell Harmon)

The First Runner-up

Switch uniforms each quarter to keep people guessing and confused. (Robin Bushman) (A related suggestion was to make all the players wear the same uniforms.)

The Champion

Before a player takes a free throw, the referee spins him around ten times. (Anonymous. Seriously. Anonymous.)

    The Serious

    The Third Runner-up

    Allow women players. (Alix Bax)

    The Second Runner-up

Require at least one player on each team on the floor to be shorter than 5'9". (We could call this the "Muggsy Bogues" rule.) (Lori Harding)

    The First Runner-up

Reduce the shot clock to thirty seconds. (Joe Collet)

    The Champion

Raise the basket from ten feet to twelve feet. (Val Anderson)

Thank you. You were great. Next week, we’ll be more serious. Seriously. We love this stuff.
